Congratulations to the Morenci Downtown Development Authority (DDA) on becoming a Michigan Main Street Engaged Level community. The designation connects the DDA with training, practical tools, and guidance to help strengthen the downtown corridor. It also offers opportunities to learn from other Michigan communities in their work to attract businesses, fill storefronts, improve public spaces, and encourage people to spend time downtown.
“Downtown Morenci matters to this community, and we want to see it thrive for years to come,” said DDA Chairperson Chelsea Craig. “Through improvements to our public spaces and events that bring people together, we’re making downtown a welcoming place to visit and an attractive place to open a business. Joining Michigan Main Street is an exciting opportunity to build on that momentum.”
The board’s preparation included completing a downtown assessment and participating in Michigan Main Street training. With that foundation in place, the DDA will use the program’s guidance to identify priorities, organize committees, and develop a work plan toward a future Select Level application. That process will create opportunities for business owners, residents, and volunteers to contribute their ideas and talents.
“We’re seeing new businesses and investment in downtown Morenci, and there’s a lot to look forward to,” said Heather Sarnac, executive director of the Morenci Downtown Development Authority. “Reaching Michigan Main Street’s Engaged Level strengthens the work underway. We’re excited to have this partnership as we continue working alongside our local businesses and community to shape downtown’s future.”
