Mosquitoes need standing water to complete their life cycle, and even small amounts of water can create breeding areas. Residents can help reduce mosquitoes by regularly walking around their property and draining, filling, or removing anything that holds water.
Empty water from buckets, cans, tires, children’s toys, wheelbarrows, flowerpot saucers, pet dishes, birdbaths and wading pools. Change pet water daily and birdbath water weekly. Keep swimming pools properly maintained, pull tarps and pool covers tight so water cannot collect, and store containers upside down when they are not in use.
Residents should also clean leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts, ditches and drainage pipes; repair leaking outdoor faucets; and fill low areas, tire ruts or puddles with dirt or sand. Tree holes and hollow stumps that collect water can also be filled. Trimming overgrown grass, weeds, shrubs, vines and ground cover can reduce the cool, damp areas where adult mosquitoes rest.
