As temperatures climb, Morenci Area EMS Director Chad Corbin is encouraging residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Extreme heat can affect anyone, but older adults, young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning are at greater risk of experiencing heat-related health problems.
Residents can help protect themselves and their families by following a few simple heat safety tips:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours.
Wear lightweight clothing and seek shade when outdoors.
Spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
Check on neighbors, family members, and friends who may be vulnerable to extreme heat.
Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
It is also important to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms of heat exhaustion may include heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, and fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and may cause confusion, loss of consciousness, a very high body temperature, and hot skin. If heat stroke is suspected, call 911 immediately.
During regular business hours, the Stair District Library and Morenci Senior Center are available as cooling locations for community members seeking relief from high temperatures.
Morenci Area EMS encourages residents to stay informed, stay hydrated, check on neighbors and loved ones, and make use of local cooling locations when needed.
