The Morenci Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is excited to welcome residents and visitors back to The Downtown Commons at 116 North St. for its second season in downtown Morenci.
The outdoor public gathering space will officially reopen for the season during the first Summer Block Party Concert on Friday, June 12, and will remain open daily throughout the summer and into the fall as a casual place to gather, relax, and connect.
Located within Morenci’s Social District boundaries, The Downtown Commons offers a welcoming outdoor space where visitors can enjoy food and beverages from downtown businesses while spending time with friends and family. Social District beverages in approved district cups are permitted in the space.
Current features include oversized Connect Four, bistro seating, and painted chess/checker tables, with additional games and activities rotating in throughout the season.
North Street Pub is also helping activate the space with a fun special. Visitors who stop in to borrow the pub’s cornhole boards for use at The Downtown Commons can purchase a hot dog or corn dog for just $2 during regular business hours.
Originally launched last year as part of the DDA’s placemaking efforts, The Downtown Commons was created to bring new life to underused downtown space while creating opportunities for community connection and supporting nearby businesses.
The DDA plans to continue enhancing the space with additional seating, signage, and other improvements over time. Community members with ideas for future additions or activities are encouraged to contact DDA Placemaking Committee Chair Brad Frederick at 517-605-1020.
