The City of Morenci has been awarded $1,180,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) as part of the MI Neighborhood Program, a statewide initiative focused on strengthening communities through housing preservation and neighborhood stability.
This funding will support the launch of the Morenci Home Improvement Partnership (MHIP) Program, the first home rehabilitation effort of this scale created specifically for Morenci homeowners. The program is designed to assist approximately 40 middle- to low-income households in making essential improvements to their homes. The upgrades will enhance safety, comfort, and energy efficiency, while helping residents manage the challenges of aging homes and rising repair costs.
Eligible home improvements may include roof and structural repairs, heating and cooling system upgrades, siding and insulation installation, window and door replacement, and other work that directly impacts the daily quality of life for residents.
“This program will allow us to partner with residents in need to care for the places that mean the most to them,” said Heather Sarnac, Community and Economic Development Director for the City of Morenci. “By helping residents afford these improvements, we are not just preserving houses; we are supporting the people who live in them.”
“Strong, safe housing is the foundation of a strong community. This program is an investment in our residents and their homes, helping maintain the health, safety, and long-term stability of our neighborhoods,” said Jeff Bell, City Administrator.
A portion of the funding will be used to hire a third-party administrator (TPA) to oversee the program and ensure full compliance with MSHDA and HUD requirements. The City will soon release a Request for Proposals (RFP) for TPA services, and applications for assistance are expected to open in early 2026. More details will be shared as the program is developed.
