Thanks to the Consumers Energy Community Street and Boulevard Tree Planting Grant, 15 new trees representing six diverse species have recently been planted along seven streets in the City of Morenci.
A highlight of the project was our Tree Planting Workshop this past Saturday, led by ISA Board-Certified Master Arborist Steve Lane. Participants learned how to select the right tree for the right place, proper planting techniques, and how to care for trees after planting, and together, they planted three new trees along Summit Street.
R&W Nursery LLC, who grew all 15 trees locally, planted ten trees last week, and the final two were planted today by our DPW team, who received hands-on training from Master Arborist Steve Lane.
Steve’s time with the DPW and the workshop was made possible through funding from the USDA Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program.
We are grateful to Consumers Energy, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Michigan DNR for their investment in our community, and to R&W Nursery, our DPW team, Steve Lane, and all the workshop participants for their hard work in making this project a success!
