The City of Morenci will celebrate the completion of the new chapel at Oak Grove Cemetery with a public open house following the community’s Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 26.
The original chapel, a longtime fixture of the cemetery, was demolished after a severe windstorm in August 2022 caused a large tree to fall on the structure, resulting in irreparable damage. Construction of the replacement chapel began in April 2024, led by Michigan Building Specialties of Adrian. The new 2,000-square-foot building was constructed on the original foundation and follows a layout similar to the original, with the DPW garage situated at the rear of the structure.
Final touches are currently underway, including interior furnishings and exterior landscaping, and will be completed in time for the open house.
Following the Memorial Day ceremony at Oak Grove Cemetery, members of the public are invited to tour the new chapel. Cemetery Sexton Eric Emmons, Assistant Sexton Christa Davis, and City Administrator Jeff Bell will be on site to welcome visitors and offer insight into the building’s reconstruction. Light refreshments will be served.
