The student-planned and run Farmers market will be a one-day event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Wakefield Park.

Last year’s experience with the school’s community garden demonstrated just how much produce can be grown in a relatively small space when students and the community work together. A student discussion of food deserts, nutrition, food distribution, and fresh food availability led students directly to the conclusion that Morenci needs a farmers market, and on May 20, that is what will happen!

This school year Morenci Area Schools is offering a new middle school Farmers Market Small Business class led by Ms. Grace Gierucki. In this multi-grade class, students are working to develop skills including marketing, finance and botany, in addition to helping students develop and apply skills such as communicating effectively and professionally, planning and organizing, and researching leadership and team-building techniques.

Students will sell transplants and produce from the school’s own greenhouse, as well as produce purchased from wholesalers. The student-planned and run market will be a one-day event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Wakefield Park.  If you would like to join in on the Farmers Market, please click here for a booth registration form.

Community members are invited to submit ideas about expanding the farmers market experience into a season-long event.
